Nothing says summer like a buttery cob of golden sweet corn‚ and Chester County residents know where to get it.
Wynnorr Farm in Westtown Township has been Chester County’s source for farm-fresh sweet corn‚ juicy tomatoes‚ ripe melons and other produce for more than 80 years.
“My grandfather purchased the farm in 1924‚ and today‚ myself and four of my brothers and sisters own the farm‚” says Joe Stratton‚ whose wife‚ Laura‚ and children‚ John and Hannah‚ also work on the farm.
“All the family members live in various houses on the farm‚” he adds. “We’re one of the last working farms in Westtown Township‚ and we believe in continuing the farming traditions that are a big part of the heritage of Chester County.”
Wynnorr Farms sells its produce at a roadside stand‚ or people can visit the farm itself from June through October.
“Starting in September‚ we offer pick-your-own pumpkins and hayrides out to the pumpkin field‚” Stratton says. “A lot of families with children come out for that‚ and we also host school groups throughout the year.”
The farm also boasts a flock of Dorset sheep and two ponies – Skittles and Farnsley. Visitors might even catch a glimpse of the wildlife there‚ including several kinds of hawks‚ red fox and white-tailed deer.
One of Wynnorr Farm’s missions is to give local teenagers their first work experience‚ so much of the farm’s workforce is made up of area high school and college-age kids. The family’s other mission is to educate the public about the science and business of farming.
“Less than 1 percent of the population today is involved in food production‚ so we feel it’s important to educate people about where their food comes from‚” Stratton says. “Farming is an awful lot of work‚ but we enjoy the bounty of what nature has to offer.”
