Although it doesn’t hold water anymore‚ the brick water tower in Westtown Township’s Oakbourne Park was once used for fire protection for Oakbourne Mansion‚ the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Smith.
Built in the 1880s‚ the distinctive stone and brick water tower has certainly stood the test of time – it was nearly destroyed by 1972’s Hurricane Agnes. Fortunately‚ the township purchased the land in the mid-1970s‚ restoring the water tower and Oakbourne Park with financial help from the Westtown-Goshen Rotary Club.
Today‚ the park features a trail system‚ playground and places for sports of all types‚ from soccer and baseball to roller hockey and volleyball. The mansion is now used as a meeting facility‚ and the recently formed Oakbourne Park Commission is investigating future uses for the historic home.
