West Chester University Welcomes New President
Greg Weisenstein is the latest president in the 140-year history of West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
He became the school’s 14th leader when appointed to the office in March 2009, following a nationwide search. He replaced Dr. Madeleine Wing Adler, who served as the university’s president for nearly 16 years before retiring.
Weisenstein arrived at WCU with impressive academic credentials, including bachelor’s degrees in history and geology, a master’s in special education, and a doctorate in administration and special education. He has also produced more than 65 publications, including four books.
“WCU is a place that is dedicated to the success of its students,” he says. “Our nearly 80,000 alumni are bringing value to their lives, families, communities and country as a result of their WCU education.”
Weisenstein says he is already impressed with the West Chester campus, which includes more than 200 clubs and organizations.
“The highly touted Kiplinger’s magazine ranks WCU 53rd among all public universities in the nation for its quality programs and value,” he says. “And as members of the WCU campus community, we support one another. This support extends well beyond graduation, when the university and its active network of alumni are ready to help launch and advance the career of a fellow Golden Ram.”
Prior to WCU, Weisenstein served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Dakota. He has also held higher-education leadership positions at colleges in Montana, Colorado, South Carolina and Washington, and served on presidential advisory committees under Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
“The term that best describes West Chester University is excellence,” he says. “We expect excellence in all aspects of our mission – teaching, scholarship and service. Our passion for excellence is reflected in each and every one of our classrooms, in our award-winning visual arts and performing arts venues, and in our national championship athletic programs.”
